Cover Letter

To those concerned,

I am a recent graduate of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. I hold a Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics with a focus on teaching English as a second language, and I am also TESOL certified. I would like to submit my application for a position as an ESL instructor.

During my undergraduate degree I took a double-major in Theoretical Linguistics and Cultural Anthropology. My linguistics degree provided me an in-depth technical background in English grammar. I value my anthropology degree for providing insight into other cultures and ways of life, and for building my intercultural communication skills. My Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics focused primarily on Second Language Learning, during which I took classes such as Curriculum Studies, Second Language Acquisition, and Pedagogical Grammar.

I have held a number of language and education-related positions relevant to ESL/EFL teaching. I worked as an Academic Writing Tutor at the Memorial University Writing Centre during an exchange to Newfoundland. Most of the students that took advantage of these services were non-native speakers of English coming from other counties. In this position I addressed students’ grammar as well as writing structure. This job required an explanatory knowledge of English to guide students and provide them with the means to accomplish their goals. This position also gave me a sensitivity to different cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Furthermore, I gained an awareness of the struggles that non-native English speakers face in learning English.

I also worked as a Teacher’s Assistant for two years during my Graduate Degree. In that position I graded students’ papers and assignments, and I also helped students understand course material that they were having difficulty with. I assisted with difficult subject matter during office hours in both one-on-one and group sessions. During my time at Carleton, I was also a Mentor for Students with Disabilities. This role involved meeting with students in their first year of university to provide advice on topics such as time management, study habits, school resources, and any concerns they might have. This volunteer position gave me a sensitivity to different educational needs.

I am passionate about language and I believe I am well-suited to this position. I would be excited to be a part of your organization, and I appreciate any consideration given to my application.

Thank you,

Ryan Potter
